European Credits Transfer System (ECTS)

Online Learning Agreement

In accordance with the European Commission’s directives, the University Clermont Auvergne is connected to the "Erasmus Without Paper" network and uses the Online Learning Agreement. This system allows the sharing and signature of the Online Learning Agreement in a digital format, with the possibility of editing it in PDF format.

What is ECTS?

The European Credits Transfer System is a student-focused system based on the work necessary for a student to complete in order to meet the objectives of the course in question, which are defined in terms of the knowledge and skills the student needs to acquire.

How has ECTS changed?

ECTS was set up in 1989 as part of the Erasmus scheme. ECTS is the only credits system that has been successfully tested and used in Europe. While it was originally set up to enable the transfer of credits, ECTS has also facilitated the academic recognition of study periods carried out abroad and developed student mobility in Europe from a qualitative point of view. Recently, ECTS has been evolving towards a credits system implemented at institutional, regional, national and European level. This was one of the key objectives expressed in the 1999 Bologna Declaration.

Why set up ECTS?

ECTS facilites the reading and comparison of courses of study for all students, both local and foreign. It also facilitates mobility and academic recognition. ECTS helps universities to organise and revise their study contracts. The system can be used as part of a diverse range of courses and teaching methods. It reinforces the attractiveness of European higher education for students from other continents.
